Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, Puerto Penasco
During the Spring of 2008 we visited the Mayan Palace Resort in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) on the Sea of Cortez using one of our vacation club weeks. We fell in love with Puerto Penasco, which is known by most American visitors (predominantly from Arizona) as Rocky Point. I prefer the original Spanish Puerto Penasco, which sounds more "romantic" than Rocky Point. And besides, Puerto Pensaco means Rocky Port and not Rocky Point.
If you haven't visited Puerto Penasco recently you might remember it as a "one burro town" as it has been referred to. Current development in Puerto Penasco will blow you away. There's a new airport going in (there are currently flights from LA & Phoenix), an American hospital, major golf course, hotel and condo development in several areas of the coast. Most of the town is still dirt roads but it is a great place for a Mexico beach vacation using Rocky Point vacation rentals or Puerto Penasco vacation rentals.
There are lots of good restaurants and seafood is a specialty. We already have our favorite little breakfast place in the Old Port area that serves great machacha or chorizo and eggs... and the tortillas are wonderful... not to mention the margaritas (I know I said breakfast, but we were on vacation).
The perfect Mexico beach vacation: Las Palomas (and Mayan Palace, which is down the coast a bit) sits on the Sea of Cortez, which is more like a very big lagoon than a sea. The waves are gentle unless it's windy. One can walk out into water up to ones waist or shoulders and just hang out. Motorized water sports are popular off the Las Palomas beach and diving is available nearby. The golf course is beautiful.
Las Palomas is run as a condo hotel and offers all the amenities of a first class hotel including several pools, a river pool and water slide for the kids and kids at heart, pool towels, maid service and room service. There are a couple of upscale on-site restaurants that serve excellent food and there is a small convenience store on site.
One of the best Rocky Point vacation rentals or Puerto Penasco vacation rentals, our vacation rental condo is in one of the oceanfront buildings, is an end unit and the floor plan offers oceanfront views from every room (two bedrooms, living room, dining and kitchen). There is a large oceanfront balcony. The condo is fully outfitted with upscale furnishings and decor. There's even a laundry room.

We own a “Registered” two bedroom “Master Suite” (a Registered week is the primary week and is given maximum priority in bookings), a Vacation Fair two bedroom “Master Suite” (a Vacation Fair week is a secondary week and is booked on a space available basis after registered week requests), and a Sun Pak One-Bedroom Suite (a Sun Pak week can be used only during limited time periods and in similar in priority to Vacation Fair weeks). Each Master Suite can sleep six or can be locked off and rented separately as a “One-Bedroom Suite” that sleeps four in a king bed and sofa bed or a “Master Room” that can sleep two in two double beds. The suites have a kitchenette, while the Master Room is more like a deluxe hotel room.

While you might be temped to never leave the resort and just lounge around the beautiful pools, hang out at the beach or play golf during your stay, all locations offer reasons to venture out of the resort like wonderful shopping, off site dining, additional beaches, ocean based activities like scuba, snorkel, boating and fishing, cultural activities and many locations have a rich history to investigate such as Mayan ruins and colonial era architecture.

The rates for Las Palomas are set by the on-site vacation rental management company and we can pass on the 10% discount we get for booking our own guests. At Mayan Palace the rates vary throughout the year and are based on the size of the accommodation, we will book our weeks at 15-25% off the best available TripAdvisor.com rate, which is a survey of all the major hotel booking engines.
The Mayan Palace Registered week (see description above) has priority in booking requests and qualifies for a 15% discount, the Vacation Fair week is more subject to availability and qualifies for a 20% discount and the Sun Pak week has time limitations and qualifies for a 25% discount. We’ll work with you to get the best deal. If you want us to try a Sun Pak or Vacation Fair week first and it’s not available then we can try the Registered week. It doesn’t matter to us as we can space bank what doesn’t get used and either rent it later or, better yet, use it ourselves. Best time to go
The ideal time to take a Mexico beach vacation, for pleasant weather, is Fall, Winter and Spring. Summer months will be warm and some locations will be humid but an ocean or sea is just outside your door in which to cool off. The most popular time periods and therefore the priciest and hardest to book are February and March, except for Puerto Penasco vacation rental/Rocky Point vacation rental, which is busiest in the summer months.
The Las Palomas oceanfront condo (Rocky Point vacation rental or Puerto Penasco vacation rental) is available year-round, including holidays, and has no minimum stay requirements, except on holidays.
The Mayan Palace Registered week and the Vacation Fair week are “red” weeks and therefore good all year except during Easter Week, Holy Week (last week of Lent), Christmas and New Years; the third week is a Preferred Members “Sun Pak” week and is limited to May through October except at Puerto Penasco, for which the time limit is extended through January, excluding U.S. holidays.
